Senate passes McCann’s legislation to help volunteer fire and EMS
SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois Senate unanimously passed legislation filed by State Senator Sam McCann (R-Plainview) to make it easier for volunteer firefighters and paramedics to receive emergency communications.
“Volunteer firefighters and paramedics sacrifice their own time every day to save lives,” said Senator McCann. “The least we can do is make it easier for them to do their jobs.”
Senate Bill 1895 would allow volunteer firefighters and volunteer EMS personnel to receive emergency calls and texts while working at their paid jobs. The legislation would make it illegal for employers to punish the volunteers for receiving and responding to the messages and calls during the work day.
“I know that most of our businesses are incredibly supportive of volunteer first responders,” said Senator McCann. “This legislation just ensures that there aren’t any so-called bad actors that get in the way of saving lives.
